CCAA’s Demo Artist, August 27: Paul Fortis

Paul has been using soft pastels as his primary medium of choice for over 40 years in Santa Cruz, CA., enjoying painting both en plein air and in the studio. His demonstration will be painting a pastel landscape from a reference photograph he has taken, demonstrating the many aspects of pastel technique. From the beginning drawing, to the color block in and tone modulation, to the finishing pastel flourishes of color, Paul will explain and demonstrate the basics of successful pastel painting. Paul will display some of the pastel substrates available for painting, as well as the variety of soft pastels and their uses in landscape painting. Paul loves to paint, and to teach, while constantly learning about the world of art. He believes everyone will learn a little bit about the magic of pastel painting during the demonstration.

Paul Fortis attended the University of California Santa Cruz, receiving a BFA in 1978. Paul studied under Don Weygandt for studio painting, and began painting outdoors under the tutelage of Peter Loftus. Peter was a major painting influence, and taught him the technique of “plein air” painting. Since that time Paul has used chalk pastel as his primary medium for painting. Paul has brought a new sense of realism and atmospheric color to pastel. His dynamic paintings capture the quality of light, color and atmosphere in nature. His major influences in outdoor painting are Monet and Turner.

Collectors throughout the country seek after his original works, and his limited edition giclees are found in public and private collections as well. Paul has participated in the juried Santa Cruz Open Studios event for 22 years, and displays his works in several galleries throughout the San Francisco Bay area.

The Central Coast Art Association meets 6:30-8 pm at the Monterey Youth Center, with a meet & greet time until 6:45 when announcements & the demonstration by the guest artist begins. Meeting/demonstration ends approximately at 8 pm.   777 Pearl St (next to Dennis the Menace Park), Monterey, the fourth Monday of each month (please check for holiday schedules).
