CCAA’s Demo Artist, May 22, Marie Massey

Our May 22 guest artist, Marie Massey, will demonstrate the painting in layers method using oil over acrylic, while painting directly from a still life of sunflowers. Massey’s demonstration will begin with a thumbnail sketch, then moving on to a sketch on canvas with red acrylic paint. She uses an open stroke so that each successive layer is visible as she blocks in values, using the complimentary colors building to the final layer in oils. For example, the underpainting of the hot, yellow sunflowers will be in light and medium blues and greens. In between layers, the sketch and re-sketch, adjustments are made to size, placement and form. The final layers are in the true colors and are completed in oil, still using an open stroke. To finish the painting, Marie will add detail and use directional strokes, while pushing and pulling values and softening and sharpening edges.

Marie Massey, studied Fine Art at the California College of Arts and Crafts, UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley and the Loveland Academy of Art, as well as with many well known, contemporary artists. In 2000, after an international career in marketing and business development, Marie devoted herself to painting and teaching full-time. She is currently represented by select galleries across the US including the San Francisco Women Artists Gallery in San Francisco, the 620 Fine Art Gallery in Pacific Grove, CA, and the Independence Gallery in Loveland, CO.  Marie also teaches painting for adultsin oil and acrylic for the City of Monterey on Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
